Intercontinental is primarily engaged in managing hotels owned by other parties and in franchising its hotel brands. That is, it sells its expertise in hotel management, systems, and marketing, while leaving investment in real property, which is far more capital intensive, requires different skills, and has a different risk profile, primarily to its partners. This is not an unusual arrangement in the hotel industry. As of 2007 it franchises over 3,200 hotels, manages over 510 and owns only 24. The owned hotels do however include many of the key properties of company’s flagship Intercontinental brand.

With Intercontinental opening up a brand new Holiday Inn Hotel in Cairo, the Holiday Inn IT Team had now started to have serious concerns with regards to the lack of backup solutions already situated on site. At the time, the Hotel Holding Group had recently purchased a large amount of hardware and naturally trying to capitalize on the deal, a backup solution.

To provide backup reliability, flexibility and ultimately scalability, plus reduce potential licensing and maintenance costs and improve business continuity, the Holiday Inn IT Team were on a mission to deploy just one backup solution that would meet every single requirement they had.

Identifying the fact that IBM Tivoli had an excellent reputation within the Storage arena, the Holiday Inn IT Manager made time available to attend a Tivoli solutions event which focused on many of the attributes of Tivoli Storage solutions. Being highly impressed with what he had seen.

Holiday Inn and Intercontinental have since selected the Tivoli solution proposal over the competition and are now the proud owners of a unified single vendor backup solution which covers both hotels. This has resulted in far less complexity with the management of solution, a powerful and very flexible backup facility that meets all backup needs, with unique daily, weekly and monthly backups with various configurations and requirements that can only be achieved by using the Tivoli Solution with the added help of full disaster recovery in the form of Tape Management for Offsite Protection. Finally, the introduction of the LAN-Free Backup Methodology has since led to much faster backups and performance levels.
